WWUN banned The Beatles!

Evidence of the Ban:

Jackson's Clarion-Ledger on August 5, 1966 reported, "Mississippi radio stations in the anti-Beatles movement are WRBC and WWUN of Jackson, WKCU of Corinth, WBAL [sic] of Meridian and WABG, and WLEF of Greenwood."

Notes:

In 1966, WWUN's programming was described as "popular music [with] news every hour on the hour."

Once the controversy erupted, many Beatles-haters made pious statements about the lack of morality or decency in Lennon, the band, or its fans. One columnist in Jackson, Mississippi, unintentionally made plain the hollowness of these critiques. In The Clarion-Ledger on August 14, 1966, writer Jimmy Ward remarked in his "Covering the Crossroads" column, "School bells will soon be ringing throughout the state and a new crop of pretty teachers will be added to the classroom staffs. A reader notes that we criticize long-haired, Beatle-cut hair dress by beatniks and youngsters and wonder what our reaction is to pretty teachers wearing sweaters. Well, sweaters have been reasonable dress for many years. There's something else to be aid for sweater-girl teachers. They outline things so clearly."
