WCMI banned and burned The Beatles!
Evidence of the Ban:
An Associated Press report (as printed in Louisville's Courier-Journal on August 4, 1966) wrote, "At Ashland, a spokesman for WCMI said, 'We don't intend to use the facilities of this station to promote atheism.' " United Press International (as printed in The El Paso Herald-Post on August 5, 1966) confirmed that "Stations WCMI in Ashland, Ky., WKOA in Hopkinsville, Ky., WONE in Dayton, Ohio, and WBNO in Bryan, Ohio, all hopped on the 'Beatle ban wagon' today."
On August 7, 1966, the Advocate-Messenger in Danville, KY wrote that "Kentucky radio stations offered Beatle fans a choice today of praying for the British singing group [or] purging themselves at a Beatle bonfire.... Station WCMI at Ashland scheduled the bonfire Saturday at sunset at the Catlettsburg football field and is asking listeners to bring Beatle records and memorabilia as fuel for the blaze. Jim West, WCMI disc jockey who organized the Beatle bonfire, said he is asking stores in the area to supply Beatle records for the blaze."
Notes:
"WCMI" was intended to mean "where coal meets iron."
