KNOE banned and possibly burned The Beatles!
Evidence of the Ban:
According to the Monroe News-Star on August 5, 1966, "Spokesmen of radio stations KUZN of West Monroe and KNOE of Monroe said the stations have taken their Beatle records off the air.... Spokesmen at KNOE radio said, 'Yes, we are taking their records off the air.' Asked how long the ban would last, he replied, 'Indefinitely.' "
The following day (August 6, 1966), the Monroe Morning World reported, "One radio station in Monroe announced it will have a bonfire to burn Beatle records." [This is presumed to be KNOE but not confirmed.]
Notes:
KNOE broadcast at 5,000 watts during daytime hours and 1,000 watts at night. In 1966, the station would sign on at 5 AM and continue until midnight. CBS and local news headlines were given every 30 minutes. Evenings from 8 PM to midnight features sports headlines and swing music.
