On August 5, 1966, The Florence Times reported, "It's bye, bye Beatles in the Muscle Shoals area... At least that's what the management of Radio Station WLAY says. This bears out the fact that Jesus' popularity is up and Beatle John Lennon is down. The ban on Beatles music at WLAY, which probably played more Beatle music tht any other Shoals station, is a part of a wave of 'Ban the Beatles' started last week by Birmingham radio station WAQY.... Clete Quick, general manager of WLAY, said that no Beatle music would be aired by the station. Quick also said that tickets to the Beatles' Memphis appearance, which were being given away in a contest, were being cancelled and that instead the station would provide tickets to a University of Alabama football contest. Quick stated that a flood of calls to the station by listeners was overwhelmingly in favor of the decision."
