WLOF banned The Beatles!
Evidence of the Ban:
The Orlando Sentinel on August 5, 1966, reported: "Here in Orlando there has been a mixed reaction. Tom Siegfreid, program director of WLOF, said, 'It is very distressing when anyone with the popularity of the Beatles and in their position to influence young people makes a public statement of this sort.' He continued, 'Until such time as there is a definite statement from the Beatles, or the quote is proven incorrect, we have stopped playing all Beatle records even though both sides of their newest release are proving very popular.' "
Notes:
Meanwhile, WLOF was also facing a rock 'n' roll-related distraction of a non-Beatles type. According to the Sentinel, a concert promoter filed a $3 million lawsuit on August 5 against a second promoter as well as the band Paul Revere & The Raiders in a dispute over an intended concert. WLOF and DJ Pat O'Day was also a defendant in the lawsuit for calling the first promoter a "crook" on the air.
