WPXE banned and burned The Beatles!
Evidence of the Ban:
The Associated Press (as printed in the Montgomery Advertiser on August 7, 1966) reported, "A stack of Beatle records, sweatshirts, buttons and pictures went up in pungent smoke here at a bonfire ringed by 300 teenagers and their parents. The torch was applied by Jay Sullivan, assistant program director of Starke Radio Station WPXE, in token of the station's position that Beatle John Lennon's quoted statements about Christianity were sacrilegious. Sullivan said all the station's Beatle albums and promotional material, as well as Beatle records and souvenirs contributed by listeners, fed the blaze on a vacant lot next to the studio."
The Fort Pierce News Tribune added the detail, "Program Director Marc Edwards called Lennon's quoted statements sacrilegious."
