WLVP-FM banned The Beatles!
Evidence of the Ban:
According to an advertisement bought by the station in Broadcasting magazine in the August 22, 1966, issue, "Ban the Beatles! So Say Our Listeners. According to a recent poll conducted by WLVP-FM regarding an alleged anti-Christian statement made by John Lennon of the Beatles, listener reaction was almost unanimously in favor of banning the rock n' roll group's records on radio. Of the many calls and letters received, only one person felt that criticism had been unjust.
"The primary concern of WLVP's listeners is not contained in Lennon's intended meaning or the motivation behind his remarks, but rather the negative impact it would have on impressionable young minds. Teenagers naturally identify with a hero-figure as part of the maturing process and often go so far as to emulate the actions of their teenage idols. If we are a Christian nation, then is it not our Christian duty to reply to any individual or group that would defile our Christian heritage? WLVP shares this conviction with its listeners.
"Where does your audience stand on this issue? Why not poll your listeners for their opinions. We feel their responses will be as gratifying to you as the result of our poll was to us.
"This ad has been paid for with $1.00 contributions from our listeners."
