KNAL banned The Beatles!
Evidence of the Ban:
The Victoria Advocate on August 6, 1966, wrote, "Radio Station KNAL Friday announced that 'in response to the wishes' of its listeners, there would be a temporary suspension of Beatles records played at the station.... A statement issued by Manager Robert C. Martin of KNAL Friday said: 'KNAL, in being responsive to the wishes of our listeners, has made the decision to discontinue the playing of records by the Beatles. Telephone calls received Friday indicate the displeasure of many of our listeners in regard to the statement attributed to one of the Beatles. On the basis of the comments expressed by our listeners, KNAL will discontinue the use of Beatle records until a satisfactory explanation is made concerning the quotation attributed to one of the Beatle group.' "
Notes:
KNAL was 80% owned by the broadcasting company of President Lyndon B. Johnson's family, primarily Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson. The Johnsons transferred their management of the company to trustees for the duration of the LBJ presidency.
The station's call letters were chosen in 1949 as a reference to the Victoria Barge Canal, a man-made waterway which was then only a proposition (construction began on the canal in 1951; it partially opened to barge and boat traffic in 1953 and fully completed in 1965). The station sometimes referred to itself as "Canal."
In 1966, every Sunday from 8 to 9 AM, KNAL broadcast services from the First English Evangelical Lutheran Church. KNAL carried Houston Oilers football games. The station also had a contract to broadcast football from the local Stroman High School (paying $510 for the rights), but one of the school board trustees was unhappy with the quality of the play-by-play announcing, declaring after awarding the contract, "I hope the broadcasts will be more presentable this year." In response, the manager of the station, Robert C. Martin, stated, "I'm satisfied we will be able to provide a very fine broadcast next year." KNAL also carried Stroman High basketball games.
The station also apparently held a "Miss KNAL" beauty pageant in 1966.
